The What
This was my fifth year volunteering to be the lighting designer for the Focus conference hosted by First Evangelical Free Church at Wheatstate Camp. The conference, held in the last weekend of February, has 250+ campers from 4+ churches mainly in Wichita.

The How
Around the end of the year, I meet with the head of the conference to get the design approved as well as a budget number to work with rental companies. In previous years, I rented from Theatrical Services Inc. but, for the past two years, I have changed to Relevant Audio Visual to provide my whole lighting package.

All of my designs begin with a floor plan that I will draw and then import into a CAD software Vectorworks. Ever since I have be the designer for Focus, I have chosen to do a “goalpost” style truss setup with rear supports.

The venue that all the main sessions are held in is very limited on power where I have to run Edison extension cables and make sure they are taped down in order to not lose power. Because of this, I use compact, energy-efficient LED fixtures.
